The Speed quiz pits two random Pokemon against each other and asks which one is faster. It trains the number sense for base Speed in a way that maps directly to in-battle decisions.

You can choose whether to include Choice Scarf cases and which EV spread (max, semi-fast, or no investment) to assume. Regulation filters scope the pool.

Thinking in Speed tiers

Moving first in battle is not about a Speed number in isolation — it is about whether you are faster or slower than the Pokemon across from you. That is why it pays to memorise a handful of common Speed values as reference points. Keep rough bands in mind — slow, mid, fast, and top-tier — and even a brand-new Pokemon can be slotted in with a quick guess like "this one looks mid-Speed."

Because the quiz shows two Pokemon and asks which is faster, you learn relative order rather than raw digits. Anchor on the Pokemon that sit on the boundaries and the lines around them fall into place together.

Max, semi-fast, and no investment

The same Pokemon moves at different real speeds depending on how many Speed EVs it runs and whether its Nature boosts Speed. A boosting Nature with full investment is max Speed, full investment with a neutral Nature is semi-fast, and no investment is uninvested — and which of the three you assume can flip whether you move first. Switch the assumed spread in the settings to rehearse the situation you care about.

A path to improvement

Start with plain comparisons and no Scarf to build the skeleton of who outspeeds whom. Once that feels solid, turn Choice Scarf on and get used to how it reshuffles the order in one move. If you know your format, narrow the pool so you only drill the Pokemon you actually face, and your in-battle calls speed up directly.

How should I think about Choice Scarf?

Scarf raises Speed sharply, so it can flip a matchup you would otherwise lose. Learn the base order without Scarf first, then switch Scarf on and study the cases where a normally slower Pokemon suddenly moves first.

What happens on a Speed tie?

When two Pokemon have exactly equal Speed, who moves first is decided at random in an actual battle. This quiz trains the faster-or-slower call, so prioritise nailing the lines where order is clearly decided.

Do I have to memorise every number?

No. Lock in the Pokemon that mark the boundaries as reference points, then judge everything else as faster or slower relative to them — that is plenty for live play.
